How to get into Bhutan?
Entry into Bhutan is by Druk air and Bhutan Airlines from Bangkok (Thailand); Delhi, Calcutta, Bagdora and Gaya (India); Kathmandu (Nepal) and Dacca (Bangladesh). The airport is in Paro valley about 2 hours drive to Thimphu, the capital. If you wish to travel overland, you can enter from the southern gateway, Phuntsholing. This main town is about 6 hours drive from Thimphu. The nearest airport is Bagdogra airport in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is 175km away and takes about 4 hours drive from border. You can also exit via the same route. Another overland entry can be made via Samdrup Jongkhar, a town in the South east Bhutan sharing borders with Indian state of Assam. However, you have to fly to Gauhati (capital town of Indian state of Assam). From there, the approximate drive to Samdrup Jongkhar is about 3 hours.
Exit by road from Bhutan can also be made through Samdrup Jongkhar or Phuntsholing. However, AS PER GOVERNMENT’S RULE IT IS MANDATORY TO TRAVEL ONE-WAY BY DRUK AIR. IT CAN BE EITHER ENTRY OR EXIT OR BOTH.
